Chapter Fourteen

Sometimes people take an instant like or dislike to places. In Nerissa’s case she felt less than happy during her stay in London. Although she was accustomed to the hectic pace of life in New York, her working and living spaces were clearly defined and there was a sense of order to everything she did.

In London, nothing seemed either ordered or regular. Working out of another company’s offices and living out of a suitcase in the bland impersonality of a hotel room were largely responsible for her feeling of discomfort. Almost from the moment they arrived, the cousins were pitched into a busy work schedule that left little time for other considerations. Any thought Nerissa might have of tracing her friend had to be shelved.

The challenge facing her and Anna was twofold. If their new associate wanted to work with them, many facets of the English business practices would have to change. At the end of their first month in the capital, they told the managing director so in terms that were forthright to the point of bluntness. As Anna had already been through the mill of resurrecting a failing business, much of what she wanted to see put into practice was familiar ground, so Nerissa let her do most of the talking, adding her own comments and spin on such items as she felt necessary.

Fortunately on this occasion, far from meeting resistance, they found the executives of the British company only too anxious to cooperate, recognizing the value in their ideas and keen to move the prospective joint venture forward.

Their acceptance of Anna’s report committed her and Nerissa to a further period of intense reorganization, involving long hours on a six, sometimes seven day working week. Having arrived in London early in the year, their tight working schedule was further complicated by the onset of the spring fashion show season. Both cousins were keen to attend, given their relatively easy accessibility to the London, Paris and Milan events.

It was the end of May before they were able to consider giving themselves some breathing space. Anna, who had made several useful contacts during their visits to the shows, announced her intention of following up on them, along with a fashion photographer she had become friendly with.

Nerissa concealed a smile and asked if the meeting was purely platonic.

‘Of course it is,’ Anna replied, ‘we’re going to seek out some venues for possible fashion shoots, nothing more than that.’

‘As you’re going to be tied up with that I’m heading off to the north of England. I don’t need to tell you why.’

Anna hugged her cousin. ‘Good luck, I hope you find what you’re looking for. And in your case I hope the meeting becomes far from platonic.’
